Robert A. Novelline, MD, FACR

    


Robert A. Novelline, MD, FACR, 
is Professor Emeritus of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and former Director of the MGH Emergency Radiology Division.  He is also former Director of the MGH Emergency Radiology Fellowship Program. Dr. Novelline received his undergraduate degree from McGill University and medical degree from Boston University. After completion of a radiology residency at MGH, Dr. Novelline completed fellowships in both vascular/interventional radiology and radiology education. In 1982, he was appointed Director of the newly formed Division of Emergency Radiology. He installed one of the first CT scanners in an emergency imaging facility and pioneered investigations on the CT diagnosis of trauma and acute non-traumatic emergencies. He began one of the first fellowships in emergency radiology and is a founding member of the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER). He received the ASER’s Gold Medal in 2000 and received their first Winged Caduceus Award for exemplary continued service in September, 2015.


Dr. Novelline also directed both the HMS Core and Advanced Medical Student Radiology Clerkships at MGH between 1975 and 2012. He developed medical student curricula in radiology, which have been widely adopted at other medical schools.  He is a founding member and first President of the Alliance of Medical Student Educators in Radiology. In 2012 Dr. Novelline received the AMSER Excellence in Education Award. Dr. Novelline is the author of the 4th through 6th editions of Squire’s Fundamentals of Radiology; currently the world’s largest selling radiology textbooks for medical students now published in seven languages.

As visiting professor he has lectured nationally and internationally on Emergency Radiology and Radiology Education. Dr. Novelline served as Chairman of the Refresher Course Committee of the Radiological Society of North America. In 2007 Dr. Novelline received the RSNA Outstanding Educator Award and he received the RSNA Gold Medal in December, 2015. Dr. Novelline has served the Association of University Radiologists in several capacities including AUR President and received the AUR Gold Medal in 2015. In 2004 Dr. Novelline received the Association of Program Directors in Radiology’s Achievement Award. HMS honored Dr. Novelline with the Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013.
