2008 Gold Medalist - Dr. Carlos J. Sivit

Carlos J. Sivit, MD,
was born in Havana, Cuba. He moved to the United States with his family in 1961 and was raised in Northern Virginia. He received his undergraduate training at George Washington University and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1981. He completed residencies in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Hospital and diagnostic radiology at George Washington University Hospital followed by a fellowship in pediatric radiology at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sivit subsequently completed a graduate program in medical management with the American College of Physician Executives and was certified as a physician executive in 2002.

After completing his fellowship training in 1989, Dr. Sivit joined the staff at Children’s National Medical Center. In 1995 he moved to Cleveland to become director of Pediatric Radiology at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. He remains in that position and is currently professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

Dr. Sivit’s research interests have been in the areas of pediatric thoracic and abdominal trauma and the non-traumatic acute abdomen. His accomplishments include the first description of active hemorrhage at CT and the first description of the spectrum of CT findings associated with systemic hypoperfusion. He has published 108 peer reviewed and invited publications, and 55 book chapters. Additionally, he has served as guest editor of two monographs, associate editor of one book and editor of one book. He has 68 scientific abstract presentations and 25 scientific exhibits. Dr. Sivit has been on the editorial board of Pediatric Radiology and has served as a manuscript reviewer for five other journals.

Dr. Sivit has been active in many radiologic organizations. He has served as president of the American Society of Emergency Radiology, on the board of directors of the Society of Pediatric Radiology and was chair of the Maintenance of Certification Committee. He has also served as chair of the Pediatric Case Base Refresher Course of the Radiologic Society of North America, and he has been a member of the Instructional Course Committee and the Scientific Exhibit Committee of the American Roentgen Ray Society.

Dr. Sivit has also lectured widely. He has presented over 110 lectures at postgraduate courses, visiting professorships and named lectures nationally and internationally.
