2002 Gold Medalist - Dr. James Rhea



James Travis Rhea, MD,FACR was an associate professor of radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Previously, he was an associate radiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and a lecturer at Harvard Business School.

Dr. Rhea completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and his surgical intership at Shands Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was president of his first-year medical class. He earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude. He received his master's in business administration from Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Rhea's research intererets are the science of radiology and healthcare cost management. His research applies the principles and methods of operations management to healthcare, specifically processing cost analysis of imaging patients with appendicitis, diverticulitis and other emergency conditions. Dr. Rhea's radiologic research has focused on CT evaluation of abdominal trauma and acute nontraumatic conditions. 

A charter member and past president of the ASER, Dr. Rhea was also a member of the Strategic Planning and Education Committees. He is fellow of both the ASER and the American College of Radiology. In addition, he is a member of the following associations and societies: the American Medical Association, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Massachusetts Radiological Society, the New England Roentgen Ray Society and the Radiological Society of North America.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Rhea has authored or coauthored of approximately 200 publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, Harvard Business School publications, books, chapters and abstracts. He was a member of the following editorial boards: Advance NewsmagazineEmergency Radiology, and Decisions ​in Imaging Economics​. Dr. Rhea was a guest editor of ​Emergency Radiology​ and an ad hoc reviewer for ​The Journal of the American Medical Association​, ​The Journal of Trauma Radiology​ and ​The Southern Medical Journal​. 

The recipient of numerous honors and awards, Dr. Rhea was presented with ASER's award for best member-in-training presentation. ASER also honored him with the presentation of the Alan Klein Memorial Lecture at the Ninth Annual Scientific Meeting. Dr. Rhea is a three-time winner of the RSNA's Certificate of Merit award. As a student, Dr. Rhea was honored as the Justin Potter Merit Scholar.
